Welcome to Department of Evolution, Genomics and Systematics! The Department is located at the Evolutionary Biology Centre (EBC) of Uppsala University, which is an outstanding venue for many aspects of evolutionary biology research. The Department encompasses about 25 research groups that are organized in five sub-departments or programs. The program of Systematic Biology that has a long and strong tradition at Uppsala University, notably through the heritage from Carl von Linné and the focus on systematic botany. The program of Physiological Botany studies aspects of molecular developmental biology of plants and the program of Evolutionary Functional Genomics studies population genetic and functional genomic processes in natural plant populations. The program of Molecular Evolution has a strong background in genome sequencing of microbial genomes and uses genomic information to study evolutionary processes in prokaryotes. The program of Evolutionary Biology has expanded significantly during the last decade to now harbour several strong research groups working in the interphase of evolutionary biology and genomics. Researchers from several programs of the Department are part of the Uppsala Centre of Evolution and Genomics, which is a Centre of Excellence initiative sponsored by a 10-years grant from the Swedish Research Council. The Department is actively involved with teaching at different levels and has responsibility for many courses included in Bachelors and Masters programs in Biology, Bioinformatics and Molecular Biotechnology at Uppsala University. Each sub-department also offers a PhD study program within their area of expertise and there are close links to the EBC graduate school on The genomics of phenotypic diversity in natural populations.
